It's commonly acknowledged that the different poop-shaped figures in Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump manga series served as inspiration.

May stand in for other related slang phrases and be used to symbolize feces and other bathroom-related subjects. Given its lively, joyful expression, it also has a wide range of unique applications, such as expressing a sense of whimsy or foolishness. Microsoft and Google previously depicted a literal pile of feces, Google’s design featuring stink lines and flies hovering above it. Available as an Apple Animoji. Pile of Poo was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015
