A yellow face, as though trembling with annoyance or suppressing tears, with X-shaped, screwed eyes and a crinkled mouth. may be used to symbolize being overtaken, as if to the brink of defeat, by a range of feelings, such as annoyance, exasperation, disgust, and despair.

Twitter and Microsoft have brows on their designs, while Facebook has a purple forehead. Vendor designs have changed over time in a noticeable way. In the past, Apple and Google integrated eyebrows in their designs. Google's earlier iterations also had a gloomier face, while Microsoft's seemed more bewildered.

Previously, Samsung's design included vertical lines across its forehead, a flushed nose, and Xs for eyes—shorthands used in manga and anime to represent emotions like shame and rage.

2010 saw the approval of Confounded Face for inclusion in Unicode 6.0, and in 2015 it was added to Emoji 1.0.
